The title of this post popped into my head as I was thinking of a theme to use for my yoga class. It tickled my writer’s fancy because it referred to animals (how apropos for a veterinarian!) and I liked the way it sounded when it rolled of the tongue. And besides, the weather felt sticky and hot just like it should be in late summer.
It’s the last week of August and I’m savouring it, every minute. I’m celebrating all its goodness by hanging around outdoors and doing those things that you can only do in the summer. Eating fresh veggies from my garden. Wearing shorts and sandals while I still can. Closing my eyes and listening to the cicadas serenading in the early evening.
As I reflect back, I’m reminded of a few other summertime highlights. I watched the fireworks display on the Detroit River. With three barges and running almost 30 minutes, it’s one of the best pyrotechnics that I’ve ever seen! I love the feeling of chest thumping as the fireworks explode. Then there was the first Ribfest Windsor, where I got to sample some yummy food. Outdoors on the riverfront with BBQ…so good. Picked blueberries with my nephews (the littlest guy ate more than he picked!) and went with them to the Detroit Science Centre.
The majority of the summer was busy, what with my sister’s wedding. Lots of preparation for five days of family, food and festivities. (Managed to squeeze in some yoga with my sister and one of my brothers. Cool.) A memorable event, with people coming from all over Canada and USA. Everyone seemed happy with how it all turned out. Congratulations to the newlywed couple!
Then this past weekend, my husband and I spent a relaxing few days in Toronto. (Love you, hunny!) Dim sum on an outdoor patio…who knew you could even do this? A sunny walk through The Beaches. Dinner of seafood and oysters on the half shell. Awesome vegetarian Chinese resto and people watching at the Kensington Market Sunday Streetfest. Shopping on the eclectic and artsy Queen Street West. Drinks at an outdoor patio bar with live music.
Labour Day is just around the corner and fall will be here soon. But I’m basking in the lingering days of summer. Sipping on some lemon sour cherry iced tea. Ahhhh…it doesn’t get better than this.
